Pressure Vessels — Application Review and Selection Process
Confirm purpose, medium and design conditions, then scope, category, code and supplier authorisations.
Pressure Vessels — Applications
Pressure storage, exchange, buffering and separation for thermal projects, subject to design assessment.
Pressure Vessels — Process Conditions and Media
Define medium, pressure/temperature, volume, interfaces and operation; volume alone is insufficient.
- Media: steam, compressed air, hot water, thermal oil, chemicals, mixed gases and oil/water mixtures.
- Pressure: design and maximum operating pressure, including vacuum/external pressure.
- Temperature: design, operating and lowest possible temperature.
- Volume/construction: volume, dimensions, orientation and cyclic loads.
- Properties: composition, concentration, corrosion, toxicity and flammability.
- Interfaces/operation: nozzle quantity/direction, flanges and continuous/batch service.
- Auxiliaries: safety devices, insulation, corrosion protection and environment.
Specify chloride/sulphide concentrations and temperature; assess corrosion/cracking before selecting materials and allowance.
Pressure Vessels — Technical Specifications and Selection Inputs
Enquiry/design inputs, not fixed specifications or licence claims.
Pressure Vessels — Material Requirements
Consider strength, toughness, corrosion, welding and manufacture; corrosion allowance does not replace compatibility assessment.
- Q245R: assess compatible water, steam and air duties; confirm temperature/pressure limits by material standard and design.
- Q345R: assess required strength for pressure construction; pressure alone does not determine selection.
- 304 stainless steel: some clean/mildly corrosive media, with composition/temperature review.
- 316L: assess chloride or mild acid/alkali service; suitability is not universal.
- Flanges/nozzles: match standards, welding and compatibility rather than require identical grades universally.
- Insulation/coatings: mineral/ceramic fibre, zinc-rich epoxy and topcoats assessed for temperature/environment compatibility.
Pressure Vessels — Customization Requirements
Custom designs need calculations and required reviews before production; customization does not waive law.
- Construction: orientation, diameter, volume, length and saddle/lug supports assessed for loads.
- Nozzles: quantity, size, standard and position.
- Materials: Q245R/Q345R/304/316L or other assessed grades.
- Corrosion protection: coatings, insulation, internal treatment/lining and polishing matched to medium/temperature.
- Accessories: relief valves, pressure/level instruments, drainage and transmitters as required.
- Options: jackets, manholes, handholes and lifting lugs included in structural design.
- Documents: materials, NDT, calculations, quality and applicable supervision documents; confirm availability and scope.
Pressure Vessels — Frequently Asked Questions
Grouped by selection, installation/use and maintenance.
Selection
What inputs are needed?
Provide design/operating pressure/temperature, volume, medium, construction, interfaces and jurisdiction; determine category under applicable rules.
How are vessels categorised?
Chinese regulated stationary vessels are generally classified into categories I, II and III using medium group, pressure and volume under applicable rules; simple vessels and other cases have specific provisions.
Are all air receivers and steam headers regulated?
Determine applicability from medium, pressure, volume, dimensions and scope clauses. Regulated equipment must meet relevant authorisation, inspection and use requirements; names alone are insufficient.
Installation and Commissioning
What installation/use formalities apply?
Verify factory documents and applicable supervision; confirm installation, notification and registration requirements for the work. Annual checks differ from periodic inspection; intervals follow applicable rules and equipment condition.
Can safety accessories be replaced arbitrarily?
No. Match design, connections, medium and relief capacity; follow device-specific calibration, verification and adjustment requirements with competent personnel.
Maintenance
What routine maintenance is needed?
Monitor pressure/temperature, accessories, leakage, corrosion and coating; perform required annual checks and periodic inspection and retain records.
How should abnormal pressure be handled?
Follow safe shutdown/isolation and emergency procedures; qualified personnel investigate. Do not repair under pressure or obstruct/adjust relief devices without authorisation.
This page does not replace professional design. Manufacture, installation and use follow applicable local law, standards and delivery documents.
